Description
circa 1818 - 1834; James and Ralph Clews, Cobridge; impressed "Clews Warranted Staffordshire" mark; 2 round serving bowls (12" dia); 3 oblong serving bowls (one 8 1/2" wide, two 11" wide); 3 two-handled trays (two 9 3/4" wide, one 17" wide); 5 rectangular platters (9 1/2", 10 1/2", 15 1/4", 16", and 19" wide); 1 covered tureen with ladle (17" wide); 2 covered tureens (8 1/4" wide); 14 plates (10" dia); 11 plates (9" dia); 10 plates (7 3/4" dia); 16 plates (6 3/4" dia); 1 bowl (5 1/2" dia); 1 bowl (6" dia); 8 soup plates (9 3/4" dia); and 1 saucer (3 1/2" dia); most decorated with the Landing of General Lafayette at Castle Garden (one 10" plate decorated with Dr. Syntax, the 5 1/2" and 6" bowls each decorated with a Chinese pavilion); together with an assembled collection of pottery by various other makers; including 1 pedestal cake plate (10" dia.), 1 covered serving bowl decorated with the London Opera House (11" dia.), 1 bowl (8 1/2" dia); 1 Dr. Syntax plate (10 1/2" dia); 1 gravy boat, 1 cream pitcher, 2 shakers, 4 tea bowls, 33 saucers, and 2 small dishes; Provenance: The Estate of Sally W. Condition
The Clews pieces: One 12” serving bowl with a 2” hairline crack to underside of rim, a small, shallow chip to glaze on interior rim, a small, shallow chip to rim, and wear to glaze along edge of rim. The other 12” bowl with two hairlines to underside of rim, a firing crack to foot ring, and an underglaze chip to foot ring. The 10 1/2” wide platter with brownish discoloration to edge of rim and underside of rim. One of the 9 3/4” wide two-handled platters with a 1 1/2” hairline to underside of rim, and glue residue to top. The other 9 3/4” wide two-handled platter stuck to the 9 1/2” wide platter (probably stuck with glue; unable to separate the two pieces for full inspection, but the 9 1/2” platter with two small chips to rim.) The cover and foot of large tureen and with small areas of dark residue (rubs off easily). The bowl of large tureen with a 3” hairline to interior. The 17” wide two-handled platter with glue residue to top, and 3-4 small, shallow glaze chips along rim. The 15 1/4” platter with a 1 1/2 x 1/2” area of mis-matched blue overpaint to rim., apparently to address a shallow chip affecting the top side only. The 17” platter with a 1 1/4” wide area of small, shallow chips along rim, a 1 x 1/4” area of black overpaint to rim, apparently to address a shallow chip affecting the top side only. The 19” platter with a 12 1/2”-long “L”-shaped crack visible on top and underside, tape residue to underside, and an approximately 1 x 1/4” possible overpainted repair to top side of rim. The 8 1/2” wide oblong serving bowl with a 3/4 x 1/4” chip within a 1 1/2 x 1“ repair to underside of rim, another repair to rim measuring 2 x 1/2”, residue to interior, and general wear and fading to glaze. One of the 11” wide oblong serving bowls with extensive , poorly executed repairs and visible cracks. The other 11” wide oblong serving bowl with a glaze pop to interior. One 8 1/4” wide tureen with the finial sitting askew on the cover but apparently undamaged, a small chip to foot (possibly inherent), a small glaze chip to top of cover and small chips along edge of cover. The other small tureen with heavy crazing to interior. One 5 3/4” diameter bowl with a 1 x 1” chip to underside. One 6 3/4” plate with small chip to rim. One 6 3/4” plate with a 2 x 1 inch piece broken off of rim (part of an old repair- piece retained.) Another 6 3/4” plate with a small, shallow chip to underside. One 7 3/4” plate with a hairline. Another 7 3/4” plate with a 1/2 x 1/4” chip to top side of rim. One 8 3/4” plate broken in half and repaired. One 10” plate with a hairline to underside of rim. Another 10” plate with a minute chip to rim. Another 10” plate with heavy brown discoloration to underside and cellophane or plastic wrap melted onto rim. Another 10” plate with two chips to rim (the larger chip 1/2” diameter. ) Another 10” plate with cellophane or plastic wrap melted onto rim. Another 10” plate with small, shallow chips to rim and inside edge of border. Another 10” plate with a small, shallow chip to top side of rim. Condition of the mis-matched, extra pieces by various other makers: Approximately seven of the mis-matched small saucers with cracks and / or chips (one with wire hanger attached.). The sauce boat with two chips to underside of foot. The crescent-shaped dish with a large repair and cracks to rim. The round covered serving dish decorated with the London Opera House has a chip and adjacent 4” crack to the cover, and a chip to the rim of the bowl. The small pitcher has a chip to the spout rim. The cover of the covered mug is stuck to the body of the mug.
