Splendida xilografia tedesca databile intorno agli anni ’70 e ’80 del Quattrocento. Lo studio di questo raro e prezioso foglio si è svolto attraverso il confronto con altri esemplari di silografia a foglio singolo, eseguiti tra il 1400 e il 1500 come opere autonome, distinte dalla produzione di immagini correlate a testi scritti. La raffigurazione del Salvator Mundi insieme alla Madonna è un soggetto piuttosto inconsueto: in questa composizione le due figure sono rappresentate sotto un porticato decorato e sono separate da una colonna con capitello ionico ornato; il Cristo, in postura ieratica, regge nella mano sinistra il Globo crucigero mentre benedice con la mano destra alzata; la Madonna ha le mani giunte e il volto rivolto verso terra con atteggiamento meditabondo. Troviamo una raffigurazione simile del Salvator Mundi, senza la Vergine Maria, in un’edizione del Plenarium stampata ad Augsburg da Gunther Zainer nel 1474: nel presente foglio unico tuttavia il tratteggio delle vesti e le linee dei volti sembrano più arcaiche e ancora più marcata appare l’espressività. Ottima impressione completa alla linea di inquadramento più qualche millimetro di margine, in eccellenti condizioni. Alcuni restauri visibili principalmente al verso. Traccia di filigrana non identificata.

Beautiful German woodcut dating about to the seventies and eighties of the fifteenth century. The study of this rare and precious sheet took place through the comparison with other woodcut single sheet specimens, executed between 1400 and 1500 as autonomous works, distinct from the production of images related to written texts. The representation of the Salvator Mundi together with the Madonna is a rather unusual subject: in this composition the two figures are represented under a decorated portico and are separated by a column with an ornate Ionic capital; the Christ, in a hieratic posture, holds in his left hand the Orb with cross while he blesses with his right hand raised; Our Lady has clasped hands and her face turned towards the ground with a meditative attitude. We find a similar representation of the Salvator Mundi, without the Virgin Mary, in an edition of Plenarium printed in Augsburg by Gunther Zainer in 1474: in this single sheet however the hatching of the garments and the lines of the faces seem more archaic and even more marked expressiveness. Excellent impression complete at the framing line plus a few millimeters of margin, in excellent condition. Some restorations visible mainly on the verso. Trace of an unidentified watermark.
