Laid in is a slip with a penciled inscription to the wife of Dr. Jesse Babcock Ferguson, "Mrs. J.B. Ferguson with the respects of the author". Jesse Babcock Ferguson was a defrocked minister from the Nashville Church of Christ. The minister had been expelled from the church in 1857 for his advocacy of Spiritualism. Ferguson would go on tour with the Brothers Davenport who operated in the fascinating intersection between spiritualist charlatanism and stage magic.

Condition

Slight chips at fore-edge of title page and a couple of leaves, some toning; very good in a fine modern binding.
