Fijian Ula Tavatava Throwing Club, 19th C., Melanesia. Fine classic example with carved head, dark red brown patina from age and use. Antique paper label reading: "Club from the Santa Cruz Is/the gossip is...Bishop/Patteson was killed." John Coleridge Patteson(1827-1871) became a martyr Bishop when he was murdered at Nukapu, an atoll in the Reef Islands in the Santa Cruz Islands, on 20 September 1871. Age crack running through head and label. From the collection of Joseph Salamanca. Size: 18'' x 5'' x 5'' (46 x 13 x 13 cm).
