He received his education from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and the Ecole Des-beaux Arts in Paris, France until 1905. Nuyttens main interests were drypoint and etchings, but he practiced with a wide array of mediums. He created illustrations for several novels written by L. Frank Baum. He also participated in the making of propaganda posters during World War 1. In 1918, he was granted a knighthood from the Order of Leopold. Nuyttens was also awarded bronze medals for his work during the War, from the Queen of Belgium and Elizabeth of Bavaria. In 1925, he immigrated to the United States. He became well known for illustrating portraits of famous figures such as Calvin Coolidge, Abraham Lincoln, and Thomas Edison. He briefly owned a restaurant, which he was forced to sell because he refused to be pressured into selling bootleg alcohol by local gangsters. His work has been exhibited at the White House, the Congressional Library, and the Royal Palace in Brussels. Though, most of his work was on exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago.Sadly, he died in a house fire on January 9, 1960, which also destroyed a large portion of his work.
