Santa Cruz Money Sticks/Hair Ornaments, Solomon Islands. Worn by men on the head and used as bride price. Feather money is used in Santa Cruz as traditional money. It takes a long time to make these feather sticks and they are only made by specialists. The scarlet honeyeater bird (Myzomela cardinalis) is caught with a trap using sticky perches. The feathers are plucked from the head, breast and back then the bird is set free to keep the population stable. Together with four braided plant fiber covered sticks. From the collection of Joseph Salamanca. Size: Ranging from 7.5'' to 13.5'' (24 to 34 cm).
