Nelson Lewis was a respected master gun maker of top quality precision marksman rifles from the 1840s through the Civil War, and beyond in Troy, New York. -N. LEWIS/TROY/ N.Y- is marked on the top of this 42 caliber 30 inch, octagon barrel. This has the usual unmarked back action lock as seen on most of the Nelson Lewis guns. It has a spurred steel trigger guard, adjustable double set triggers, iron Swiss pattern butt plate, pewter forend cap, a large well defined relief carved cheek rest, and a removable lollipop peep sight in the wrist. Inlet into the butt stock is a German silver patch box. Very handsome. About fine condition with a very attractive smooth brown patina. The stock is likewise fine. The wood to metal fit is surgically precise. The lock and set triggers are mechanically perfect. This is a very attractive New York rifle, made by a master gun maker showing the expected quality known on these top quality marksman-s guns.
