A PAIR OF CARVED GILTWOOD LION MASKS18TH CENTURY each approximately 24cm high, 21cm wideProvenance: Private Collection, SurreyPurchased by the current vendor from Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, 12th October 2007, Lot 542 (£2,346.50 including premium). A photocopy of the original receipt is available with this lot.
Condition
There are some marks, scratches, knocks, chips, splits and abrasions consistent with age and use. There are cracks along the sectional construction joints.There are losses and restorations including the holes to the outer edges of the mouths suggesting that there might have been rings at some stage; rubbing and chips to some areas including protruding parts like the edges of the flowerheads, the nose and tips of the mane; gesso cracks along the sectional construction joints and elsewhere; holes to the back from previous fixings, later ring hooks now to the tops.There is evidence of worm visible overall.Please refer to the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition.
