Description
Prague School, around 1600, Fighting Horse. Four horses fight each other, a white horse lies fallen on the ground, a gray and a bay horse attack each other rearing up. On the left, another light gray horse kicks its hooves backwards. The dark background of the stone adds drama to the scene. Painting on slates or other stone tablets is a feature of the High Renaissance and Mannerism. It was invented by Sebastiano del Piombo after Vasari. It was hoped that this would make the painting last "forever". Oil on slate, 30 x 47 cm
