Description
A fine and important Chinese Export green enameled dinner service, circa early 19th C., with floral roundels and Fitzhugh-style borders with thistles and gilt adornment to the handles. To include a soup tureen, cover, and stand; a sauce tureen, cover, and stand; a sauceboat and stand; an oval vegetable dish and cover; a square vegetable dish and cover; a pierced chestnut basket; a square bowl; a shell-shaped serving dish; five platters; six dinner plates; eight soup plates; six side plates; and five pots-de-creme with covers. Originally ordered by Benjamin Etting (Philadelphia, 1798-1875), thence by descent. See J. G. Lee, "Philadelphians and The China Trade", pp 183-184, which describes the career of the merchant Etting, and comments that the design was known as the thistle pattern by the family.
