Description
A set of two antique framed paintings on glass. The artworks were created using a combined technique that includes mezzotint print and reverse glass painting. The paintings are colored copies of the engravings made by John Simon after Nicolas Lancret. The artworks represent The Four Times of Day: Morning, 1739 and The Power of Beauty, ca. 1730s. Each painting is titled in the bottom middle and accompanied by rhymes in English. Signed J. Simon fec. et ex. in the lower left and N. Lancret pinx. in the lower right. Nicolas Lancret, 1690-1743, was a French painter famous for his depictions of the tastes and manners of French society. John Simon, 1675–1751, was an English engraver.
