Israeli General, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin Signed Photo
YITZHAK RABIN (1922-1995). Israeli General, Ambassador to the United States, Prime Minister, 1994 Nobel Peace Prize, Assassinated by a Jewish extremist on November 4, 1995, at a Peace rally in Tel Aviv to muster support for the Israel-PLO accords.
Rare formate Color Photograph Signed, "Y. Rabin" as Prime Minister of Israel, 10.5" x 7", mounted to similar sized card. Photograph is not dated but was taken in Moscow in April 1994 during Israeli Prime Minster Yitzhak Rabin's 4-day visit to Russia, the first official visit of an Israeli Prime Minister to Russia. Rabin appears to be speaking and wearing dark suit and glasses. Most of the audience is made up of men in military uniform. The Israeli and Russian flags are visible on the dais.
Yitzhak Rabin was born in Jerusalem. As a teenager he joined the Palmach, the commando force of the Yishuv(the Jews living in Palestine before independence). He eventually rose through its ranks to become its chief of operations during Israel's 1948 War of Independence.
He joined the newly formed Israel Defense Forces in late 1948 and continued to rise as a promising officer. He helped shape the training doctrine of the IDF in the early 1950s, and led the IDF's Operations Directorate from 1959 to 1963. He was appointed Chief of the General Staff in 1964 and oversaw Israel's victory in the 1967 Six-Day War.
Rabin served as Israel's Ambassador to the United States from 1968 to 1973, during a period of deepening U.S."Israel ties. He was appointed Prime Minister of Israel in 1974, after the resignation of Golda Meir, serving from 1974-1977. Perhaps his most enduring achievement during his first term as Prime Minister was the 1975 Interim Agreement with Egypt, which laid the groundwork for a permanent peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, which was achieved in 1979. In his first term, he also ordered the Entebbe raid.
As Prime Minister again (1992-1995), Rabin put a freeze on new Israeli settlements in the occupied territories. His government undertook secret negotiations with the PLO that culminated in the Israel-PLO accords (September 1993), in which Israel recognized the PLO and agreed to gradually implement limited self-rule for Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
In October 1994 Rabin and King Hussein of Jordan, after a series of secret meetings, signed a full peace treaty between their two countries. The territorial concessions aroused intense opposition among many Israelis, particularly settlers in the West Bank. On November 4, 1995, Prime Minister Rabin attended a mass peace rally in Tel Aviv, which was held to muster support for the Israel-PLO accords. The rally ended with tragedy when Rabin was assassinated by a Jewish extremist.
