The King of France Declares War on Great Britain Reported
June 1756-Dated French and Indian War Period, THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, England, Complete, Choice Extremely Fine.
Enlish Magazine measuring 8" x 5" with a 2-column layout, by Sylvanus Urban, "Printed by D. Henry and R. Cave at St. John's Gate", map. This intriguing issue includes a wide variety of articles, letters, and advice, the most important of which is the French King's Declaration of War on Great Britain (this appears at the bottom of the first column on Page 269 (as part of a larger article) where a simple sentence reads:
".... and which have at length obliged (the French King) to declare war against the king of England, as the king of England has declared war against him both by land and sea." This was the official beginning of the French and Indian War (also known as the Seven Years War. Other interesting articles include a satirical description of Voltaire from "a great P---ce" and "Instruction to Gen. Braddock, published by the French Court."
Also included in this issue is a continuation of a look into the life of Buckingham, an article discussing Saxon coins, a historical chronicle on news of the day, a list of births, etc., and a comparison of naval strengths between Britain and France. Several pages dedicated to reporting on "American Affairs" and other great historical contemporary reading.
