Little Girls on a Snowy Day. Illustration for an unknown publication. Gouache on board. 215x145 mm; 8½x5¾ inches, framed to 13½x10½ inches. Signed "M.W. Baxter" lower left image. Martha Wheeler Wallace Baxter, an outstanding painter of miniatures, was born in Vermont in 1869. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, the Art Students League in New York City, and in Paris. She developed a love for the American West and permanently relocated to Southern California where she belonged to a host of professional associations including the California Art Club, Women Painters of the West, Society of Western Artists, Artists of the Southwest, and the National Society of Arts and Letters.
