"The Dodge Club or Italy in 1859" by James de Mille, with one hundred illustrations. Published by Harper & Brothers, New York, 1869. First Edition. [Watters p.273; Rhodenizer p.977].
While a student, De Mille traveled extensively in Europe. "The Dodge Club or Italy in 1859" is a comic novel of adventure in which he integrates his Italian experiences.
Marbled hard boards, leather spine and corners [surface wear, leather crease between front board and spine, the boards are attached: see photos]; 6" x 9.1/4"; former owner's label [Sarah Wierman] is inside front cover, her signature is on the front endpaper and title page; the title page has corner folds and an 1/2" edge crease, 133 pages + Harper's 4-page List of New Books dated May 1, 1869; some wear, very good condition.
James De Mille (1833-1880) was a professor at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, and an early Canadian novelist who published numerous works of popular fiction from the late 1860s through the 1870s. He authored of more than 30 novels with a wide range of appeal, particularly noted for his wit and humor.
