Description
Antique two-division Victorian brass letter holder with pierced and embossed decoration and cherubs on the sides, 1880s-1890s. The cast into mold Bradley & Hubbard five-sided triangle and lantern mark is present.

The brass letter holder consisting of three parts and the base is screwed together; the authentic Bradley & Hubbard mark and product number '4211' on the base, c.6.1/2" x 2.1/2", 6" tall [16.5cm x 6.4cm x 15.2cm]; a little wear and signs of cleaning, brass patina consisting with the age, see photos, very good condition.

The Bradley & Hubbard products were extremely popular in the 1880s-1910s, therefore other companies copied their designs. Antique brass or cast iron Bradley & Hubbard imitations [counterfeits] without proper Bradley & Hubbard mark are still available on the antique market.

Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Company(1852-1940):

Walter Hubbard and Nathaniel Lyman Bradley, Meriden, Connecticut, started making cast iron clocks, tables, frames, andirons, lamps, chandeliers, sconces and sewing machines in 1854. The company became Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Co. in 1875. The triangle mark was introduced in the late 1870s-1880s. Overall the company patented 238 designs and mechanical devices. "By the 1890s, the Bradley and Hubbard name was synonymous with high quality and artistic merit," said Richard E. Stamm for the Smithsonian Institution, which has an extensive collection of Bradley and Hubbard manufactured design objects in its collection.

Over 175 Bradley & Hubbard designs are in North American museums and collections, including the Baltimore Museum of Art; the Brooklyn Museum; the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal; Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh; Connecticut Historical Society, The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan; the Historic New England organization in Boston; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute in Utica, NY; the Smithsonian in Washington; the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford; and Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven. A customized interior installation by B&H is also situated in the James Blackstone Memorial Library in Branford, CT.

In 2006–07, Bradley & Hubbard designs were featured in an exhibition "A Brass Menagerie: Metalwork of the Aesthetic Movement" in Utica, NY and New York City.
