John Crawfurd was sent as an envoy to Burma in 1826 with the aim of establishing a permanent British residency there, and forming good relations with the Court of Ava. Whilst he 'revealed little capacity as a negotiator... the book he wrote about his experiences, published in London in 1829, proved to be of exceptional value' (Howgego, Encyclopaedia of Exploration 1800 to 1850, 2004).
