As a contemporary of Harry Bertoia, Curtis Jere, and William and Bruce Friedle, Bowie can be considered a founding figure in the mid-century American metal sculpture genre. In 1972 he opened the Sculpture Studio in New York City, where he created abstract sculpture and wall sculpture for homes, hotels, and other commercial buildings.
