Item Details
Description
An English delftware 'Oak Leaf' charger, circa 1690
Boldly painted with a central leaf and four other leaves around the border each painted in turquoise-green with manganese veins, a series of blue and yellow berries filling the design, the underside with a lead glaze, 33.5cm diam
Footnotes:
This type of decoration was copied from Italian maiolica dishes imported into England from Tuscany during the middle of the 17th century. Traditionally known as an 'Oak Leaf' charger, it seems more likely this decoration represents vines. It is unusual for the design to extend to the rim without a 'blue-dash' edge.
Condition
There is a crack running from the rim (at around 7 o'clock on the clock-face) in towards the footrim and curving around one side of the footrim. There is a small associated rim chip. The crack has been secured with three neat rivets or staples to the underside. There are some tiny sliver chips associated with the crack to the upper surface, some of which have been filled. Otherwise in good condition with typical light wear to the rim and light scratches to the upper surface of the dish.
