Description
A very rare Stourbridge cameo glass wall sconce, circa 1880-90
In yellow glass overlaid in white with gilt metal mounts, the circular panel deeply carved with two sprays of roses both with one full-blown flower and one closed bud, the central boss reserved with a smaller rose spray, surmounted by a central ovoid nozzle carved with a band of similar flowers, the branching stem fitted with two candle sconces fitted with drip-pans, all carved with formal borders of leaves and petals to simulate flowers, mounted on a circular velvet backplate, 29cm wide
Footnotes:
Provenance
Sotheby's, 10 October 1966, lot 45
This wall sconce was one of a pair with lot 46 sold by Sotheby's in 1966, the companion sconce being described as damaged. At the time no other wall sconces were recorded and none have surfaced since, making this a unique survivor. It is typical of the cameo glass produced in Stourbridge in the late 19th century, although the identity of the maker is unclear.
