Description
A fine Lund's Bristol butterboat, circa 1750
The very shallow boat modelled in the shape of a single leaf, the underside with crisply moulded veins spreading from a branch or stalk that extends into a short handle, the interior painted in blue with a curious rock among twigs or grasses, the border with a series of precious objects tied with ribbons, 11cm long
Footnotes:
Provenance
Watney Collection, Phillips, 10 May 2000, lot 535

This belongs to a class of butterboats or deep pickle dishes formerly attributed to Limehouse but now believed to be Lund's Bristol on the basis of chemical analysis. Ray Jones, The Origins of Worcester Porcelain (2018), p.247 illustrates three closely related examples, including a very similar but much smaller dish from the Billie Pain Collection sold by Bonhams on 26 November 2003, lot 96.
