A rare Liverpool (William Reid) milk jug, circa 1756-58
The flared rim with a simple squeezed lip at one side, with an elaborate scroll handle and pointed thumbrest, painted in dark red with two swans swimming in an oriental landscape, a red feather-scroll border below the rim, 9cm high

This well-known and most delightful jug is illustrated by Maurice Hillis and Roderick Jellicoe, The Liverpool Porcelain of William Reid (2000), no.28 along with matching shards discovered on the Reid site, shown on p.45, fig.Y. It is also illustrated by Bernard Watney, Liverpool Porcelain (1997), fig.208 (as Gilbody) and by Maurice Hillis, Liverpool Porcelain (2011), p.54, fig.3.92.
