This screen is carved from a single piece of white jade, with bas-relief carvings of figures, landscapes, flora and birds on both sides. On the front of the screen, it depicts an elderly hermit accompanied by his attendant who prepares to cross the bridge, among a well-composed visage of pine trees, a creek and a rigid mountain. On the back, it depicts an arrangement of vivid flowers, birds and stones. Chrysanthemums symbolize longevity, auspiciousness and hermitage, qualities that are emphasized by the hermit figure on the front. Such themes were particularly popular during the Qianlong period. This screen comes with an expertly crafted hardwood stand with ocean wave, with intricate details that are typical of 18th century craftsmanship. Similar examples can be found in the collections of the Palace Museum, Beijing, accession number 00103187 and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 02.18.638.
