Polk Assigns Certificate of Merit to Private John Walters

James K. Polk DS Washington D.C., dated November 25, 1848, issuing a Certificate of Merit to "Private John Walters of Company B of the 2nd Regiment of the Dragoons having distinguished himself… in the Battle of Cerro Gordo, on the recommendation of Col. W. S. Harney...". The appointment is signed by President James K. Polk and countersigned by the Secretary of War William L. Marcy. Expected creasing from folding, minor spotting on the back of the document, and slight toning present with evidence of prior matting. Overall great condition. 16" x 10".

Polk declared war on Mexico in 1846 after an incident in which Mexican troops killed several Americans. The Battle of Cerro Gordo was fought between the United States and Mexico on April 18, 1847 near the city of Veracruz. Teaming up with the forces of Military Governor Bennett C. Riley of California, the regiment of William S. Harney defeated and killed General Ciriaco Vasquez, making the battle a decisive victory in the Mexican-American War.
