Chester Nimitz Signed & Inscribed Photo During Japanese Surrender

Measuring 13.75" x 11", U.S.S. Missouri, Tokyo Bay, dated September 2, 1945. A black and white photograph of the Japanese surrender aboard the U.S.S. Missouri signed "C.W. Nimitz, Fleet Admiral, USN" along with the inscription on the photographic border: "To Mr. and Mrs. Al Mosher - with best wishes and great appreciation of your hospitality and courtesy." Nimitz is depicted signing the Japanese Instrument of Surrender while Admirals Sherman and Halsey, and General Douglas MacArthur look on. A printed signature is seen on the book Nimitz is signing. Foxing and toning throughout, with some minor staining near the end of Nimitz's signatures. Worn corners. Silvering throughout the photograph. Boldly signed.

Admiral Chester William Nimitz (1885-1966) was a career naval officer and arguably the most important American naval officer of the 20th century. His leadership, strategic mind, and special technical knowledge of submarines, naval engines, and underway refueling combined to establish Nimitz as the prototype of a World War II military leader and effective wartime decision-maker. He was appointed by FDR to serve as Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet in late 1941 and was later granted the command of one of the Pacific Theater's three military territorial zones. In this capacity, he oversaw operations at the Battles of Coral Sea (May 1942), Midway (June 1942), Guadalcanal (August 1942-February 1943), Iwo Jima (February-March 1945), Okinawa (April-June 1945), and many others. Nimitz was promoted to the rank of Fleet Admiral on December 19, 1944 and was present at the Japanese surrender as a U.S. Representative on September 2, 1945.
