Mother Teresa (1910-1997), born Anjeze Gonxhe Bajaxhiu, was of Albanian-Indian heritage and entered Roman Catholic religious orders in the early 1930s, serving most of her life as a missionary in India. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a worldwide religious organization devoted to succoring "the poorest of the poor." The organization established orphanages, soup kitchens, schools, hospices, and hospitals all around the world for the underprivileged, the societally abandoned, and the dying. In 1979 she won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work and was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016.
