Description
[CIVIL WAR]. High grade Horstmann US Model 1850 Staff & Field Officer's sword with etched cavalry blade.

31 1/2 in. curved single-edged blade with 25 in. stopped median fuller and flat spine. 37 3/4 in. overall length. Gilt-finished brass half-basket 1850 Staff & Field pattern guard with "US" in face, single knuckle bow, and Phrygian helmet pommel cap. Grooved wood grip covered in shagreen and with 14 wraps of brass wire, consisting of three pieces with two outer plain strands and twisted central strand. Obverse ricasso stamped in two lines "HORSTMANN / & SONS" with reverse ricasso stamped "PHILADELPHIA." Blade decorated for approximately 15 in. from the ricasso with acid-etched martial and patriotic themes and with panoplies of arms. Browned steel scabbard with gilt brass mounts and scroll retailer logo on reverse upper mount that reads "HORSTMANN / & / SONS / MAKERS / PHILADA" in five lines. Sword is accompanied by a gold bullion officer's sword knot.

Sword in very fine to excellent with most of the bright polish and frosty etching remaining on the blade. All decorations remain clear and crisp, markings crisp as well. Hilt with much of the gilt remaining. Shagreen wrap intact with some minor wear, wire warp with some minor looseness but complete. Blade to hilt fit is tight with untouched peen. Scabbard with most of the lacquer browned finish remaining and some gilt on the brass mounts. Scabbard shows some scattered surface freckling and minor oxidation but is free of dents. Sword knot with moderate wear.
