Description

A wonderful French gilt bronze and enameled table box marketed by Ovington Brothers of New York City. Wood lined, consisting of 5 detailed bronze scenes depicting French country life, with white and blue enamel highlights. The top scene is surrounded by engraved undulating dragons and champleve blue enamel. Toned patina, size: 4 3/4 in. wide x 3 1/2 in. wide x 2 1/8th in. tall, marked on the inside of lid catch "Ovington New York Chicago"; and "France", condition is excellent.

The Ovington Brothers were a New York retailer of fine household goods that apparently started in business around the mid-1800's. They stocked some of the finer imported European porcelain and china goods that could be obtained at that time; made by such companies as Sevres, Minton, Cauldon and others. After a devastating fire in 1884 destroyed their store, the brothers rebuilt a new six-story department store on Flatbush Avenue in the Brooklyn shopping district. The business prospered and eventually other branch locations were opened in Manhattan and Chicago. The last of the three original brothers died in 1909, but the store continued to be run by the family and continued to sell fine china, bronzes, glassware and other treasures from Europe. Around 1920, the name was shortened to just Ovingtons.
