Description
A bronze Scotty dog Figurine cast in the Gorham Foundry for the artist Maruerite Kirmse, 3 in. long x 1 1/4 in. tall, marked on bottom with "Gorham Co" "M.Kirmse" and letters "OGG8". Very good Condition. Marguerite Kirmse was noted for her art specializing in dogs. She was born in Bournemouth, England, in 1885 and moved to the United States in 1910. In her early years her work consisted mainly of drawings, etchings and paintings that centered on dogs. She went on to become an illustrator of many books, the most desirable of which were about dogs. In the late 1920's-30's, she made sculptures of dogs that were produced in bronze by the Gorham Foundry in Rhode Island. While she made sculptures of numerous breeds, she is possibly best know for her "Scotties", of which she made 3 smaller versions (like the one listed) and two larger sculptures. Of her smaller Scotties sculptures the 3 editions involved sitting, crouching and standing models which Kirmse called "Pensive", Playful" and "Perky", respectively. All works by her are highly collectible, especially among dog enthusiats. She died in 1954 in Bridgewater, Connecticut.
