A FINE PRE RUP STYLE KHMER BRONZE FIGURE OF VISHNU
Cambodia, 10th - 12th century. The bodhisattva standing in samapada on a rectangular base, four-armed, holding a disc and a conch in the upper hands, a mace and a mala bead in the lower, wearing a sampot, the hair secured into a high chignon. Mounted on a recent metal base.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear and green verdigris.
Provenance: French private collection, acquired at the Renault Montmeat Gallery, Paris.

Vishnu is a deity of Vedic origin and along with Brahma and Shiva, forms part of the Trimurti or Triad in Hinduism. He represents the principle of preservation and, thanks to his various avatars, is able to intervene when the universal order is threatened.
