The Lower Roman Empire is the historical period from the rise of Diocletian to power in 284 until the end of the Western Roman Empire in 476. This is the period in which the institutions of the Empire began to deteriorate, particularly that of the emperor himself, leading to the year 476 as the date that definitively marks the fall of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the Middle Ages.
