Item Details
Description
HAIG PATIGIAN (American/Armenian, 1876-1950), Ritchfield Archangel, circa 1920's, gilded terracotta bust sculpture, overall: H: 25 inches, W: 37 inches., D: 28 inches. Provenance: Lent by Lois M. Wright n.d. Private Collection of Lois M. Wright, Author of “A Catalogue of the Life Works of Haig Patigian, San Francisco Sculptor, 1876-1950),” 1967, Loan to Oakland Museum of California (Oakland, CA). By Familial Descent to Current Owners. History: Richfield Tower, also known as the Richfield Oil Company Building, was constructed between 1928 and 1929 and served as the headquarters of Richfield Oil in Los Angeles, California. It was designed by Stiles O. Clements and featured a black and gold Art Deco façade. The unusual color scheme was meant to symbolize the "black gold" that was Richfield's business. Haig Patigian did the exterior sculptures. The building was covered with architectural terra cotta manufactured by Gladding, McBean, as was typical of many west coast buildings from this era. In an unusual move, all four sides were covered since they were all visible in downtown. Located at 555 South Flower St. It was once home to one of Los Angeles's most adored architectural building of its time. In the 1960s it made way for what is now the Arco building and unfortunately the developers chose to demolish. This piece from the building, created by Patigian made its way to the collection of Lois M. Wright, the Author of "A Catalogue of the Life Works of Haig Patigian San Francisco Sculptor, 1876-1950),” 1967. This piece along with the rest of Ms, Wright's collection was stored at the Oakland Museum of California until early 2022 when it came to Michaan's Auction's. This is a very rare piece of art and architectural history, and will be a rare work for any serious collector. Condition: gold finishing chipped in various areas. Ask the Fine Art Department for more info.
