Description
Louis E. Jones (Tennessee, 1878-1958) oil painting (canvas laid on board) depicting a sunlit creek bed in the Great Smoky Mountains, with water rushing over boulders at the edge of a lush tree line. Blue-green mountains in the background with a sliver of cloudy blue sky in the upper right-hand corner. Signed in red lower left, and additional signature and partial date in black at lower right. Housed in a grey painted wood frame with gilt accent and off-white fillet. Roman numeral III in pen, en verso. Sight: 11 1/2" H x 13 1/2" W. Framed: 15 3/8" H x 17 1/2" W. First half of 20th century. Note: Jones was an Impressionist painter from Woodstock, New York, and established the Cliff Dwellers studio in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Condition
Canvas laid on board. Surface grime and scattered abrasions, largest measuring 1" x 1/8". Some of the scattered areas of paint flaking reveal various colors underneath, suggesting the possibility of this current work being painted over a previous oil. Canvas possibly cut, date at lower right partially lost. Frame with some wear and three small nail holes to sight edge.
