Description
East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely cast bronze censer vessel with colorful cloisonne enamel and a lobed body resting on 3 legs molded as flowering branches with handles. The matching lid rests flush inside the rim, surmounted by a prominent bronze tree trunk finial with a songbird perched on top. The surface under the lid finial and the underside of the vessel's base are both textured with intricate interlocking shapes, and a raised maker or inscription mark is set into the center of the base in Chinese characters. Size: 12" L x 9.5" Diameter x 13" H (30.5 cm x 24.1 cm x 33 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

Condition
Signs of heavy use and old repairs. Feet and bird finial are slightly loose but secure, with abrasions to enamel near rivet points. Mineral encrustations and green / black patina on interior from use as censor. Surface pitting and nicks to enamel cloisonne and surface wear to bronze exterior commensurate with age and use.
