Description
A Tlingit horn feast ladle
Finely crafted from mountain sheep horn, with graceful curve and restrained embellishment, the grooved handle opening to a wide bowl with a slightly raised rim, the tip corresponding in form to that of a stylized raven's head.
length 18 3/4in, width 5 3/4in
Footnotes:
Several large-scale ladles sharing strong similarities with the present lot can be seen in the collection of the British Museum (object numbers Am1906,0629.1 and Am,NWC.34), both dated to the last quarter of the 18th century.
In personal correspondence with the consignor, Bill Holm, Curator Emeritus of Northwest Coast Art at the Burke Museum, called this example 'remarkable' for its quality, condition, size, and 'pure form,' and noted the grooved carving on the interior of the rim evocative of Northwest Coast canoe gunnels.

Condition
Good condition overall with some scattered scuffs, scratches, nicks and wear commensurate with age and use. A number of nicks/chips and fleabites to the edge of the bowl commensurte with use as well; the largest loss about 1in x 1/4in. More nicking, small losses and wear to the terminal of the handle.
