Provenance
Property from the collection of Dr. Marvin and Mrs. Natalie Gliedman, NY, NY

See Harston, J. Emmor, Comanche Land, 1963, The Naylor Company, San Antonio, TX, where the frequent appearance of a sun motif on Niuam shields is discussed: 'Each warrior feathered, painted and 'medicined' his shield to suit himself; but all were painted to represent the sun ... The painting was done with cinnabar (scarlet quicksilver ore), of which they had an abundance in their Chisos Mountain camps.', p.123. The author further indicates that other colors which appear prominently on these shields are yellow ochre and various shades of blue.
