Item Details
Description
A PAIR OF GEORGE II SILVER SHAPED OVAL PLATTERSWILLIAM GRUNDY, LONDON 1750With gadrooned borders and engraved with an armorial34cm (13 1/2in) long1837g (59.05 oz)Provenance: The Property of the Trustees of the Davenport Estate The arms for LEICESTER of Westbury. A record of an exact match for the armorial can be found in Papworth Ordinary of Arms. This identifies the owner of the arms as LEICESTER of Westbury, Salop with an unknown quartering. The arms include the mark of a baronet applied to the quartering. The LEICESTER baronets are of Tabley, Cheshire and reference to their heraldic records show the paternal arms differ in that the fess is tinctured gules and not or as is the case of the engraving to this piece. This disparity may be the result of an error in engraving or may be an applied difference created by the holder, a descendant the LEICESTER family. Notably the baronetcy ends in 1826 when the LEICESTER family become barons Tabley. In 1792 at the time of the assay Sir John Fleming LEICESTER (1762-1827) is the 5th Baronet and the son an heir of Sir Peter LEICESTER (1732-1770), 4th Baronet by Catherine FLEMING, youngest daughter and co-heir of Sir William FLEMING 1st Baronet of Rydall, Westmoreland. The blazon of arms for FLEMING is recorded as gules, a fret argent but despite this disparity it is expected that quarterly in your image refers to LEICESTER-FLEMING marriage and inheritance and the item was commissioned by the 5th Baronet.
