Description
Nathaniel Folsom letter signed ("Nathl. Folsom Majr. General"). One page, 8.25" x 12.25", "State of New Hampshire"; October 26, 1778. Docketed. War-dated letter to Colonel Jonathan Chase concerning the movement of British ships off the coast. Addressed to Colonel Jonathan Chase in Cornish, Folsom reports on intelligence concerning the enemy's movements and commands Chase to be ready to march. It reads, in full: "The honble Committee of Safety having received Authentick [sic] Intelligence that more than One Hundred sail of the Enemys Shipping having left New York, and were the 17th Instant at Sandy Hook there destination Unknown/ Probably bound Eastwar[d]. You are therefore required to give...Orders, that the Regiment under your Command may hold themselves in readyness [sic] to march at a moments warning to the Seat Coast, in Case the Enemy make their appearance in this Quarter..." Signed, "Nathl. Folsom Mar. General". An interesting war-dated letter regarding the military movement in and around the colony. Nathaniel Folsom (1726-1790) was a major general in command of the New Hampshire Militia and was largely responsible for recruiting and supplying the forces. He was a prominent political figure in New Hampshire during the Revolutionary War years and served in the Continental Congress. Folsom signed the Articles of Association as a delegate for the state in 1774 and was appointed to the powerful Committee of Safety the next year. Condition: Chip along right margin affecting two words of text from seal removal upon opening. Light scattered dampstaining, soiling and foxing.
