Item Details
Description
James Clinton muster roll signed ("James Clinton B. Genl"). Two pages on one leaf, 13" x 16.5", West Point, New York; July 5, 1780. Manuscript document. Docketed. Brigadier General James Clinton endorses a muster roll for the Fourth New York Regiment at West Point. A manuscript muster roll for Captain Theodosius Fowler's company in the Fourth New York Regiment. It records the company's five officers, their ranks, and date of their commission, as well as forty-two enlisted men, some with remarks noting if they were transferred, discharged or (in one case) deserted. The verso contains a table titled "Proof of the Effectives" which lists that only three officers and twenty enlisted men were considered operative. It is signed by Nicholas Fish, as inspector and mustering officer, and Ensign Samuel Dodge. Clinton signed the document as witness, "James Clinton B. Genl". James Clinton (1736-1812), a veteran of the French and Indian War, was commissioned a colonel of the Third New York Regiment in 1775. He spent the majority of the Revolutionary War years along the northern frontier. Clinton took part in the failed Quebec invasion in the winter of 1775, was promoted to brigadier general in 1776, led the Sullivan-Clinton Campaign with Major General John Sullivan in 1779, and took part in the siege of Yorktown in 1781. One month after this document was signed, Benedict Arnold was given command of West Point and arrived to carry out his treasonous plot. James Clinton was brother to New York Governor and Vice President George Clinton, and the father of New York Governor De Witt Clinton. The document is accompanied by an engraved vignette portrait of Clinton by H. B. Hall. Condition: .5" and .75" closed tears at edges of the horizontal fold. Minor soiling and foxing. Pencil notation to recto. HID03101062020 © 2022 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
