Group of manuscript material signed by members of President George Washington's cabinet. An impressive grouping of material signed by President George Washington's Cabinet members, including Timothy Pickering, Alexander Hamilton, William Bradford, Charles Lee, Henry Knox, James McHenry, Samuel Osgood, Joseph Habersham, Oliver Wolcott Jr., and Edmund Randolph. Collection of thirteen manuscript items signed by members of President George Washington's historic cabinet. It includes seven autograph letters signed, one autograph document signed, two documents signed, two letters signed, and one free frank, for a total of thirteen items. The material ranges from 1785 to 1810 with ten items signed during Washington's presidency. Includes: Edmund Randolph document signed ("Edm: Randolph") as Secretary of State. Four printed pages of a bifolium, 8.25" x 13.25", [Philadelphia]; [circa 1795]. Broadside. [Philadelphia: Printed by Francis Childs, 1795]. "Third Congress of the United States...An Act to provide more effectively for the Collection of the duties on goods, wares and merchandize imported into the United States..." Signed while Secretary of State. With accompanying engraving of Randolph. Evans 29698. Timothy Pickering document signed ("Timothy Pickering") while Secretary of State. One partially printed page of a bifolium, 7.75" x 10", Philadelphia; February 14, 1800. A passport for one "Samuel Sitgreaves, a native of the State of Pennsylvania..." Docketed. Signed while Secretary of State under President John Adams. With accompanying hand-colored engraving of Pickering. Alexander Hamilton free frank ("Free A Hamilton") while Secretary of the Treasury. One page of a bifolium, 7.5" x 9", "Treasury Department"; no date, [Docketed June 25, 1792]. Printed circular from the Treasury Department concerning "An Act for raising a farther sum of money for the protection of the frontiers." Addressed to Epes Sargent, collector of the port of Gloucester. Hamilton free frank is located on the address leaf at the lower left. Docketed. With accompanying engraving of Hamilton. Oliver Wolcott Jr. letter signed and free franked ("Oliv: Wolcott"). One page of a bifolium, 8.25" x 10", "Treasury Department"; May 8, 1795. Addressed to Nathaniel Appleton, Commissioner of Loans in Boston, requesting an explanation for why Appleton directed the Treasurer to issue him a line of credit for $57,000. Signed while Secretary of the Treasury. Docketed, purportedly in the hand of Appleton. With accompanying engraving of Wolcott. Henry Knox letter signed ("H Knox Secy of War") as Secretary of War. One page, 7.5" x 12.5", "War Department"; August 10, 1793. Addressed to General [Edward] Hand, acknowledging receipt of John Evans's petition for discharge from military service. Docketed. With accompanying engraving of Knox. Timothy Pickering autograph letter twice signed ("T. Pickering" and "T.P") while Secretary of War. One page, 8" x 12.75", "War Office"; May 2, 1795. Addressed to one Samuel Hodgdon, Quartermaster General of the Army. Encloses a letter (not included) from one Captain Price, concerning an order of clothing, one drum and one fife for Pittsburg recruits. Docketed. The verso, above the addressee, contains an autograph note signed with initials from Pickering, stating that one Ensign Martin reports his men cannot march until they are supplied with clothing. Written by Pickering while Secretary of War. With accompanying engraving of Pickering. James McHenry autograph letter signed ("James McHenry") while Secretary of War. One page, 8" x 9.75", "War Office"; April 28, 1796. Addressed to Samuel Hodgdon [Quartermaster General of the Army], requesting that one Mr. Langham be informed that "no bills will be accepted or paid which he is not previously authorized to draw..." Signed while Secretary of War. Edmund Randolph autograph document signed ("Edm: Randolph") while Attorney General. One page, 7.75" x 3.5", Philadelphia; May 19, 1791. Manuscript document addressed to one James Brown requesting payment of $100 to Mr. William Lambert. Verso records receipt of payment. Docketed. Signed while Attorney General. With accompanying engraving of Randolph. William Bradford autograph letter signed ("W. Bradford") while Attorney General. Three pages of a bifolium, 7.25" x 9.75", no place, [Philadelphia]; May 9, 1795. A lengthy letter addressed to Samuel Bayard, an American agent in London, discussing inflation prices, family inquiries, and enclosing a bill (not included). He also refers to "insurgents" and President Washington's inability to fill the post of comptroller. It reads, in part: "...The insurgents have been indicted but none of them have had their trail yet. This has been the Effect of the Trial of the Wioming [sic] Cause, between the Penna. & Connecticut Claimant, which began two weeks ago & is not yet ended." Docketed. Written while Attorney General and just three months before his death. With accompanying engraving of Bradford. Charles Lee autograph letter signed ("Charles Lee"). One page, 6.25" x 7.5", Alexandria, [Virginia]; January 23, 1810. Letter addressed to one Thomas Swinn, Esquire, concerning a dispute between a Mr. Carter and a Mr. Taylor. It reads, in part: "At the present moment I do not feel inclined to act as referee on such a question...My opinion is that those gentleman ought themselves to adjust their controversy upon equitable terms, the nature of which it belongs not to me to suggest." Signed, "Charles Lee". Lee served as Attorney General for President Washington from 1795 to 1801. With accompanying engraving of Lee. Samuel Osgood autograph letter signed ("Samuel Osgood") while Commissioner of the Treasury. Two pages of a bifolium, 7.25" x 9", "Board of Treasury"; November 20, 1785. Addressed to Nathaniel Gilman, Commissioner of the Loan Office in New Hampshire, transmitting an Ordinance of Congress "relating the Duties of the Commissioners of the Continental Loan Offices" (not included). Docketed. Written while serving as the first Commissioner of the Treasury, later served as postmaster general for President Washington. With typed transcription and accompanying engraving of Osgood. Timothy Pickering autograph letter signed ("T. Pickering") while Postmaster General. One page of a bifolium, 7.75" x 9.25", no place, [Philadelphia]; August 29, 1792. Addressed to Henry Drinker (1734-1809) concerning available land in the possession of one "Colo[nel] Hollenback of Wyoming", a former neighbor of Pickering. Docketed. Written by Pickering while Postmaster General. With accompanying engraving of Pickering. Joseph Habersham autograph letter signed ("Jos Habersham") while Postmaster General. One page of a bifolium, 7.5" x 9.25", "General Post Office", Washington; October 10, 1800. Addressed to Caleb Baldwin, postmaster of Trumbull, Connecticut, transmitting a commission (not included) for deputy postmaster of Newtown. With accompanying engraving of Habersham. Condition: Light edgewear with examples of scattered soiling, toning and foxing. Habersham ALS with paper loss from rodent damage that does not touch any text. Bradford ALS is separated along integral fold, toned, with strip of dried adhesive residue along edge from prior mounting. Osgood ALS separated along integral fold. Lee ALS is a bit light.
