Edward Hand muster roll signed ("Edw:d Hand B.G."). Two pages on one leaf, 15.75" x 12.25", "Camp Mindham", [New Jersey]; March 5, 1780. Manuscript document. Docketed. Brigadier General Edward Hand endorses a muster roll for a company under the command of Colonel James Livingston. A manuscript document titled "Muster Roll of Colonel James Livingston's Company of Foot in Service of the United States of America for the months of January & Febr'y 1780." It records twenty-six men, some with their rank and date appointed listed. A few contain additional notes under the "Remarks" column such as "Sick present", "Sick absent", or "Prisoner". The verso contains a table titled "Proof of the Effectives" which lists the men considered operative. Boldly signed, "Edw:d Hand B. G." Countersigned by Lieutenant William Belknap. Edward Hand (1744-1802) was an Irish-born farmer and physician from Pennsylvania. He served at Fort Pitt from the late 1760s until his resignation in 1774. However, just a year later, he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the Pennsylvania Battalion of Rifleman (later the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment). Hand ascended through the ranks quickly and was promoted to brigadier general by early 1777. At the time of this document, he was months away from his appointment to adjutant general of the Continental Army and would serve under Washington in that capacity at the siege of Yorktown. Condition: 5.25" closed tear along integral fold. 2" and 3" closed tears to horizontal folds along right edge. Slight separation to three words at bottom of document caused by ink burn. Two minor areas of paper loss along the integral fold at the intersections of horizontal folds. Toned, with scattered soiling and foxing.
