Description
Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette 1824 commemorative silk ribbon. 6.75" x 1.5". White silk ribbon with oval portrait of Lafayette bordered with ornate wreath and "La Fayette / The Friend of Freedom / The Country's Boast" framing the portrait. Issued by H. Korn of Philadelphia. A striking commemorative of Marquis de Lafayette's famous 1824 tour of America. These ribbons were retailed by Korn to commemorate Lafayette's 1824 return to the United States. As the last living Revolutionary War hero, he was invited to tour the country by President James Monroe. He arrived on August 15, 1824 and toured all twenty-four states of the union over the next thirteen months. Given his renowned status, the tour was a momentous event and commemorative items such as this ribbon were issued by a devoted public. This one remains in great condition and would display quite well. It is accompanied by an engraved vignette portrait of Lafayette. Condition: Light scatted soiling with minor edge. Uneven right edge.
