Description
Complete Collection of Signers of the American Constitution. Second only to a complete set of Signers of the Declaration, we are pleased to present this complete collection of Signers of the American Constitution. Where the Declaration states our right to exists as a sovereign nation and all that entails, the Constitution is the lifeblood of the American government, outlining the balance of power and forming the basis for all subsequent laws therein. This exceptional collection includes manuscript material from all forty men who penned their names to the historic document, thirty-nine state delegates and one witness to the final draft. The example offered here consists of fourteen autograph letters signed, one letter signed, three autograph documents signed, fifteen documents signed, one clipped signature, three pieces of paper currency signed, one free-franked address leaf from Abraham Baldwin (considered one of the rarest signatures in this set), and a three language ship's passport signed by President George Washington. This set also contains an additional autograph letter signed by the Secretary to the Constitutional Convention, William Jackson, who signed the document as witness to the final edits of the Constitution, culminating in a total of 40 manuscript items in this stunning collection. George Washington three language ship's passport signed ("Go: Washington") as President. One partially printed page, 13" x 15.75", Washington, [North Carolina]; July 26, 1795. A passport printed in French, English, and Dutch, which authorizes the passage of "Peter Cockran master or commander of the schooner called the Industry of the burthen of Ninety five & 48/95 tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of Washington bound for Falmouth and laden with Tar, Pitch, and Besswax..." Signed, "Go: Washington." Countersigned by Edmund Randolph as Secretary of State, Nathan Keais as Collector for the Port of Washington, North Carolina, and John Gray Blount as Notary. With blind embossed paper seal at center left of the document and at the bottom. Open tear at lower left measures .5" x .5" with some loss to text. Evidence of repair to closed tears and previous separations along horizontal folds and one vertical fold on verso, two of which cross the signature. Chipping along old folds with minor paper loss just affects text. Originally a sea captain by trade, Nathan Keais (1740-1795) was appointed a captain in the Second North Carolina Regiment in the Revolutionary War. Keais and John Gray Blount (1752-1833) were two of the original commissioners that established the town of Washington after they petitioned the state assembly to transfer the seat of county government from Bath to Washington in 1784. President Washington appointed him the Collector of the Port of Washington on March 21, 1791, a post he held until his death in 1795. Blount was a politician, merchant, and landowner from North Carolina who served on the House of Commons, the state Senate, and the council of state. He was a justice of the peace, as evidenced here, and served as the postmaster at Washington from 1791 to 1815. Benjamin Franklin clipped signature ("B. Franklin"). One page, 5"x 3", no place; no date. Partial manuscript document reading, "Your Excellency's most / obedient & humble sert. / B. Franklin." Clipped from a larger document. With accompanying steel engraved portrait of Franklin. Somewhat dampstained, chiefly to margins; scattered soiling; dried, toned adhesive residue and one small piece of cloth top on the verso from prior mounting. Representative of Philadelphia. Alexander Hamilton letter signed ("Alexander Hamilton"). One page, 1"x 9", Treasury Department; May 2, 1792. Manuscript letter signed "Alexander Hamilton" as first Secretary of the Treasury; addressed to the President and Directors of the New York brand of the Bank of the United States, regarding pending payments. Docketed on verso. With accompanying steel engraved portrait of Hamilton, delicately hand-colored. Minor edgewear; creased along old folds and just beginning to split at edges; light scattered foxing. Representative of New York. James Madison document signed ("James Madison") as President of the United States. One page, 15.75"x 9.75", Washington [D.C.]; November 15, 1813. Document signed by "James Madison" as president of the United States, appointing William Eaton a "Collector – under the act, entitled ‘An act for the assessment and collection of direct taxes and internal duties'... for the sixteenth – collection district in the state of Massachusetts..." Wax and paper seal intact. Docketed on verso. With accompanying steel engraving of Madison. Creased along old folds, with minor losses at edges and intersections, chiefly unaffecting text; light scattered foxing and soiling, one fold partially reinforced on verso with paper tape.
