Publisher's light brown cloth stamped in blind and gilt on spine and upper cover, top edge stained in brown, tan dust jacket printed in brown with wrap-around 'Book of the Month' band in green and white. Spine ends bumped, gilt stamping on spine cloth slightly discolored, jacket browned at edges, with slight wear to corners, spine panel slightly darkened.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE, with 'FOR THE JOHN DAY PUBLISHING COMPANY, INC.' on copyright page, and 'flees' for 'fleas' on p. 100, line 17. The Good Earth is Buck's most important work, the best-selling novel for 1931 and 1932, winner of the 1932 Pulitzer Prize, and instrumental in her 1938 Nobel Prize for Literature. Exceedingly scarce in the original dust jacket, and the rare 'Book of the Month' band an integral piece of the book's history, as its selection was an important driver for the astonishing early sales.
