Description
HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. 1899-1961.
The Green Hills of Africa. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1935.
8vo. Illustrated by Edward Shenton. Publisher's light green cloth stamped in gilt and black, original dust jacket. Minor marginal creases to upper panel and corners.
FIRST EDITION, first issue dust jacket without the photographer's name on the back panel. Green Hills of Africa is Hemingway's account of his 1933 African hunting trip, but as G.C. Poore acknowledged in the New York Times, it's also 'about people in unacknowledged conflict and about the pleasures of travel and the pleasures of drinking and war and peace and writing.' Indeed, it includes possibly the most famous Hemingway quote on literature and writing: 'All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn ... All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since.' Hanneman A13a.
