Description
[WASHINGTON, GEORGE. 1732-1799.]
LE PAON, JEAN-BAPTISTE. C.1736-1785. Le General Washington / Ne quid Detrimenti capiat Res publica. [Paris: Chez le Mire, C.1780.]
Copper-engraved print by Noël Le Mire after a painting by Le Paon, 515 x 367 mm, on laid paper, tipped to a board in a modern frame. Several small tears and marginal chips repaired with japan paper backing, light browning. Matted and framed.
Engraved by Noël Le Mire after a painting by Jean-Baptiste Le Paon (also called Louis Lepaon). Le Paon based Washington's head on that of Charles Willson Peale. The engraving also shows influence from John Trumbull's paintings of Washington with Washington's slave Billy Lee tending Washington's horse in the background. This image shows Washington holding unfurled documents including the Declaration of Independence and the Treaty of Alliance between Great Britain and the United States. A number of torn documents are scattered on the ground at Washington's feet. This example likely an early edition, produced before title.
