Description
CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN HAND-PAINTED ARMORIAL PLATTER, octagonal form with notched corners, featuring a central shield depicting the arms of Morgan (a griffin) impaling Warton surrounded by floral bouquet and ribbons, having motto "SEMPER IN BONA CAUSA PARATUS" below, and a colorful floral swag border design. Circa 1780. 20 1/2" x 16 7/8", 1 1/2" HOA.

Provenance: From a Williamsburg, VA private collection.
Catalogue Note: This platter is part of a service made for Colonel James Morgan (1740-1808) who served with the East India Company. He married Mary Warton in December 1774, who was the eldest daughter of Reverend Joseph Warton, Headmaster of Winchester College. A matching platter was part of the collection of Rafi Mottahedeh that sold at Sotheby's in October 2000.
