Description
AMERICAN PICTORIAL WALLPAPER BAND / HAT BOX WITH MARYLAND QUAKER ASSOCIATION, oval form depicting a church and three-story structure with trees alternating around the exterior, plain-paper lined interior, retains original cover. Top of cover featuring pasted-down manuscript copy pages with inked inscriptions including "Lydia A. Griffith" and "L. A. Griffith", page titles include "The Hour of Death". "The Bible", "Take Back the Ring", and "Heaven" which ends with "Brick Meeting House School, Md 1837". The box features an architectural drawing of a church interior signed "J. Boker (or Bolter) del_r" laid down in the bottom and another drawing of the gallery glued to underside. Circa 1840. 12" H, 13 3/4" x 19".

Provenance: Retains an old Christie's auction label to underside.
Catalogue Note: The identity of the buildings on the present box are unknown. They have been identified as Harvard, Yale, and the New York State Capitol building in the past.
Lydia Ann Griffith (1819-1899) was the daughter of Nathan and Mary Griffith of East Nottingham, Cecil Co., MD. She married Clemson Brown (1818-1887) in 1844. Her parents along with her family were life-long members of the East Nottingham Friends Meeting in Cecil Co., MD. Lydia and her husband are buried at the Brick Meeting House Cemetery, Calvert, MD.

Good as-found condition with typical wear and soiling, some small losses, primarily around base.
