Description
JOHN D. HEATWOLE, ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JUG / PITCHER, salt-glazed, approximately half-gallon capacity, finely potted bulbous body with graceful sloping shoulder and tall neck, incised ring below rim, single incised neck ring, additional double incised shoulder rings, and strap handle. Brushed cobalt double-bloom floral decoration to body, brushed "1860" to proper right shoulder, and dropped feather decoration below spout. John D. Heatwole (1826-1907), Dry River Pottery (active circa 1850-1890), Rockingham Co., VA. Dated 1860. 8 7/8" H, 5" D rim.

Condition
Very good as-found condition, rim having a crack with associated chip and a hairline with associated flake, and an "L"-shaped hairline extending from base partially up to medial body. Manufacturing flaws including hairline to lower handle terminus, as made.
