PENNSYLVANIA TOBACCO MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, designated two-gallon capacity, shouldered, cylindrical form with flat-top rounded rim, beaded shoulder ring, and Albany-slip glazed interior. Stenciled cobalt "Weyman & Bro. / Pittsburgh, Pa." and brushed cobalt stripe below rim. Circa 1875. 11 3/8" H, 6 5/8" D rim.
Provenance: From a Virginia private collection.
Catalogue Note: In 1822, George Weyman, the patriarch to Wyman & Bro., is credited with creating a new blend of snuff he called Copenhagen. The smokeless tobacco product is recognized as one of America's earliest consumer products with a brand name. His sons William and Benjamin, inherited the business after their father's death, renaming it "Weyman & Bro." in the 1870s.
